Pregnant Students and Student Parents
Students who are pregnant or parents have protections under Title IX and may be entitled to:
- Time and space for lactation;
- Pregnancy-related absences;
- Modifications in physical environment
- Academic accommodations
Students are encouraged to contact the Title IX Coordinator to request reasonable adjustments/modifications. The College will not implement an adjustment/modification that alters the nature of the course, or fundamentally decreases the academic standards established. There are no special words or phraseology required to make an accommodation request.
Hawkeye Community College will excuse absences from class due to pregnancy, a pregnancy-related condition, and/or physical recovery from childbirth for as long as the student is under a health provider’s care and it is deemed medically necessary.
When the student returns from an excused absence, the student will be given a reasonable opportunity to make up any work they may have missed, It is left to the instructor to determine what is a reasonable opportunity to make up the work on case-by-case basis and can vary based on the following:
- Program of study;
- Volume and type of work missed;
- Length of absence;
Absences for parenting students due to illnesses of their children shall be treated the same as absences due to illnesses of the student.
